CANON HISTORY:
Her past life's world is rather strange by our standards. It is a place shaped by dreams and emotions, though it is a physical world. There are meat forests, cotton candy swamps, and literal foothills along with other really interesting landscapes. There are the Towns and the Wilderness. The Towns have relatively modern technology, though it's not clear where they get it from. Things just turn up like that. Elevators that are in the shape of heads with the elevator part in the mouth take people to other parts of the Wilderness, which has many layers.

The Towns are full of a wide variety of people in all shapes. Human though often with odd touches like animal body parts or metal antennae or object heads. Talking animals and humanoid animals. Robots. Sentient fire. And so on. Many people spring into spontaneous existence, more than are born, leading to facilities for teaching new people the basics of the world and assimilating them into society. Childhood is a rare experience. Those that stubbornly refused to play by society's rules are exiled into the Wilderness and other Towns are warned about them. Thus, the Wilderness is mostly populated with criminals and the rare individual who prefers wilderness to town life. Outside the Towns, those individuals're subject to many hazards such as spike storms and other strange weather, natural fauna, each other, and monsters.

The Towns have their own stabilizing influences upon the environment. The orderly and civilized nature of life within them, including orderly agriculture in the lands surrounding the walls of the Towns, naturally creates a sort of insulation against the influences of the Wilderness, including the aforementioned strange weather. Criminals have attempted to create their own Towns, but they tend to have too much strife and disorder to benefit from this protection. The rare exceptions ended up becoming regular Towns themselves with little difference from the Towns found by non-criminals; the order required naturally produces such results. But with enough malice and pressure, this protection can be broken, which is why the monsters of the Evillands are so feared.

Crisscrossing all layers are what are called the Evillands because of their corrupting influence on all inside them. Where the rest of the world are shaped by positive or neutral dreams and emotions, the Evillands are shaped by nightmares and negative emotions. Partly for that reason but mostly because of the assorted horrific monsters, people avoid them. Those monsters are either corrupted versions of people, animals, and objects that have strayed into them, or spontaneous manifestations. Those monsters can as a result of their assorted origins take many forms. As well, in the Evillands there are streams and lakes of blood, eyes watching you everywhere, fanged maws whispering horrible secrets, and more. Even the trees are carnivorous.

Every now and then those monsters come out and cause havoc. Among them are the dire dogs, so named for their dire temperaments. They originated from the stray dogs that wandered into the Evillands or spontaneously manifested in them, and since then they have bred in large numbers. While many of them have the appearance of cute cuddly jokes and are of low threat when on their own, they tend to gather together in huge packs and swarm victims, stripping them of flesh piranha-style. Not only are their appetites ravenous, but they will attack and tear apart victims even if they aren't hungry. Among their numbers are really unusual dogs that haven't been ever seen in our world, such as metallic dogs, dogs covered with eyes, dogs that release swamps of wasps from holes in their bodies, and so on.

Someone tried to create a combination of a dire chihuahua with human blood along with candy as a catalyst in hopes that human rationality and the candy's sweetness would tone down the aggressiveness. They used a chihuahua because it was easier to capture and keep immobilized a smaller dog. Were this process to succeed, they would have a process for reforming dire dogs and making them useful members of society. Instead, they accidentally created Momo. Momo had the viciousness and ravenous hunger of a dire chihuahua, the creativity and sadism of a human, and a love for sweet and cute things.

The thing is, this procedure actually would've worked if it wasn't for the dire chihuahua's direct link to the Evillands possessed by all monsters, something they didn't know since direct experimental observation of the Evillands' monsters was very dangerous and few attempted it (and many of those died for it). If they'd managed to severe said link, reform would've been possible. As is, the negative energies of the Evillands surged into the resulting hybrid in visceral rejection of the procedure's mellowing nature. This not only made her exceptionally nasty but also gave her far more power than normal for a monster. While fighting skill comes naturally to all Evillands monsters in smaller or greater degrees, Momo with her greater concentration of Evillands energy was abnormally strong. Likewise, she gained a high concentration of the natural hunting and stalking skills of Evilland monsters.

Momo not only creatively slaughtered her creator, but in order to satisfy her appetites for suffering, adulation, sentient food, and stolen candy, united the dire dogs, creating a huge army which swept forward and overwhelmed whole towns. Momo's natural power over dogs enabled her to gather and lead her army in the first place, but it was mainly terror and respect for the strong that kept them in line. She'd killed every one that had resisted, even when they did so in groups. And her often fickle moods kept them in a constant state of fear. Morale was actually quite low, though it did naturally elevate whenever they got a chance to tear apart victims. Momo was quite aware of this and would typically psyche up her army before battle by talking about all the delicious meat and wonderful ripping and tearing they'd be able to enjoy.

Once Momo'd overrun a town, she would play with her chosen victims, torturing them and leaving them impaled shrike-style on spikes, then eating them when she was done with them. Her skills in torture was honed by years of practice and eventually she got mentored by one of the more intelligent monsters, the Pain Beast. Her 'tuition fee' was a steady stream of fresh victims for the Pain Beast.

Sheer numbers of dire dogs alone was enough to overwhelm some towns, but she had some initial military defeats, only some of which she managed to salvage by personally stepping in and slaughtering people. For example, anti-brigand traps that claimed many dogs' lives, or improvised spear ranks, or the town that had an unusually high number of firearms. Her killing her own minions in rage at those setbacks didn't help. But there was always more dire dogs to bring into her army. And she learned, developing more and more strategies, seeing which ones worked and which ones didn't (and which ones were too demanding for the dire dogs' intelligence). Then she would return to the towns that had thwarted her and annihilate them. For five years she steadily attacked town after town, honing her skills.

She devised a variety of creative strategies. Once, she tricked someone into opening the gate to let her in by promising that she would spare them and their family. She was lying. Another time, she led a diversion attack on a river town while the rest of her army dog-paddled in from the river. Because of her guile, few towns were safe. Those towns that surrendered she would force to shower her with adulation and gifts. They often did not last long before inciting the wrath of Momo or the dogs she left behind to rule and being turned into victims as a result. Those towns that resisted she would turn into a mass graveyard. For the most part, the civilized peoples were unused to dealing with organized armies on this scale and many fell, but they too learned ways to fight back, becoming better organized in their resistance.

Desperate, the town residents formulated a plan. The plot to drown her in the cotton candy swamp involved throwing a sacrificial army at her, having said army retreat after an apparent defeat, and withdrawing across paths in the swamp carefully mapped out beforehand. Said army would throw taunts as they retreated, deliberately provoking her rage to make her more focused on them than on her surroundings. Then they withdrew across a hidden scaffolding constructed across a large sinkhole and covered up with candy pelt. When Momo and a big chunk of her army were above the sinkhole, they collapsed the scaffolding which had been designed for it, causing Momo herself and most of her army to fall into sinkhole and suffocate to death in pink sugary deliciousness. Less than a fourth of the decoy army survived, but the blow to the dire dogs was far greater. The remains of the army was defeated considerably more easily after that.

The aftermath was many lost towns, but even more significant depopulation of the dire dogs. For many years after, they weren't really a menace again. The whole war was viewed as one of the most significant military events ever in history.

CANON PERSONALITY:
The first thing to understand is that Momo came into existence as a fully formed adult, and her personality was largely fixed there. She was spawned with strong appetites and she acted directly upon them. If thwarted, she would just stubbornly find a way to satisfy herself; the influence of the Evillands drove her toward instant gratification even if that encountered resistance. Essentially, her appetites were so strong that she bulldozed through all opposition to them. Thus her invasion of towns instead of just taking the low-effort approach of picking off stray victims wandering the wilderness.

Once, she was frustrated by someone who fled to an island, so instead of waiting for the next ferry she forced her minions to drown themselves forming a bridge across the pond. If despite her efforts she was frustrated in her appetites, she would go into a rage; her emotions were prone to the chaos of the Evillands and subject to the influence of the moment. Once she tortured a minion to death just for sniffing her while she was in a bad mood.

A direct expression of her corruption was her appetite for others' suffering. This came naturally to all creatures of the Evillands, but with her possession of intelligence she defined it to greater heights, finding creative ways to torture her victims. She became virtually an artisan of pain. If her victims didn't show enough pain, she'd just try harder and harder until she killed them in a rage and then ate them.

Her intelligence also lent her a certain amount of cunning as evidenced by her successful strategies to conquer and raze towns. Her intelligence also made her quite self-aware of her own senselessness; when someone asked her why she was so terrible, she said that was just the way she was created and that she was an expression of evil and nightmare. Then she tortured him to death.

She also suffered from the monstrous hunger common to all dire dogs. The Evillands gave her a special appetite for sentient flesh, but like the rest of her kind she would eat nearly anything, though with her intelligence she developed quite refined tastes, preferring more fine food quality and refinement. For this reason, she carted talented cooks around with her, forcing them to prepare foods for her, including the meat of sapients.

She had an appetite for sweets, cuteness, and love thanks to the candy component in her creation, but even this was warped by the Evillands' influence, thus her forcing her minions and victims to praise her and say they love her. Whenever denied this adulation, she pressured harder until she got what she wanted, and if thwarted she went into a rage as usual. Similarly, she would simply take sweets and indulge herself until her stomach hurt, then she would go into a rage because of the pain and those around her would suffer. She gathered a ridiculous number of stuffed animals (taken by force), was fond of pastel colors including pink, had a very cute and girly room in her fortress (furnishings stolen by force), and more.

She had the playfulness of her dog heritage, but this also was corrupted. She would force others to play with her regardless of whether they desired it. Her idea of playing was often rather unpleasant for her 'toys', though if they were lucky they could get away with being subjected to playing fetch until their arms hurt, being forced into cute clothes, and things like that. If they were unlucky, they would become victims of her more sadistic whims, including torture.

If she was constantly indulged in her appetites especially for adulation, she could actually be a pleasant person; her variability of moods also worked toward that. But this state only lasted so long before her other appetites manifested themselves. Her few long-lived sycophants had learned to indulge her when she was in a mood to indulge and to avoid her when she was in a mood to hurt or eat someone.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Momo was terrifying in terms of superhuman personal combat abilities. She could pick up any weapon and kill and maim with it, though she especially flavored knives. She had been known to destroy entire military squads singlehandedly. Combined with her personal dog army, it was so bad that her enemies ended up tricking her into a cotton candy sinkhole just to get rid of her.

Speaking of her army, she was a capable enough commander with a decent grasp of tactics. She was also able to command dogs, and many innocent dogs ended up joining her and being taken into the Evillands to convert them into dire dogs.

She also had sharp senses, combining the keen eyesight of a human with the smelling and hearing of a dog. She could easily track down someone just by scent alone. She was also fairly capable at stealth, having given many enemies an unpleasant surprise.

Lastly, she had a great deal of skill in torture.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Nina Écarlate
AU AGE: 16
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Functionally identical except for Nina's lack of dog ears and tail.

AU HISTORY:
Note: her sisters've given their consent to be mentioned by name.

Nina was born in 2001 to fairly well-off French parents. They pretty much spoiled her, and her natural cuteness received her much positive attention, leading to an early career in commercials. She grew up showered with love and attention which she came to expect. She had two sisters which she adored, the older Émilie and the younger Daniellé. She was intensely jealous of Daniellé at first, but learned that expressing her jealousy would lead to fewer of the expressions of love she desired. In fact, her early life was full of lessons like this. When she behaved well and excelled, she would get love. When she misbehaved, she would get a scolding. And besides, she eventually came to find her little sister quite cute.

However, there was an incident when she was six where she captured and tormented a squirrel. It occurred because of her idle curiosity about what would happen if she caught a squirrel and poked it with a stick, and then she just escalated when she realized she was having fun. That led to her being sent to a child psychologist. She learned from the experience not to torture animals or people will raise a big fuss. So she adopted the apologetic state that had served her well in the past, and put on the appearance of someone who sincerely felt bad about it. As such, while she was monitored for a few years, that eventually faded.

She continued life in this manner, doing whatever would gain her praise. At first her occasional tantrums at being frustrated were taken as just childish acting out, but as she grew up they didn't fade. At the age of 11, she badly scratched up a younger girl who had been bullying her little sister, who she had gradually come to adore. She landed in hot water, though her parents paid an under the table settlement to the victim's family and transferred her to another private school where she reestablished a social circle.

Then a year later, her family moved to Recollé in the United States. Adjusting was a bit tough for Nina, though it helped that she'd been given English classes in school. She at first went to a private school, where she figured out that she could get away with indulging her own sadism by bullying others with the help of her own posse. She would put on a good face for adults, getting good grades and participating in activities that made her look good and then turn around and pick on the kids on the margins. This went on until a couple of months after she turned sixteen.

After she injured a boy who had called her a dyke and expressed hope she'd burn in hell, all that changed. She was lucky her parents were donators to the school and pulled strings to have her transferred to a public school instead of sent to juvenile hall, because the victim ended up in the hospital with a broken nose and other injuries. Her parents also paid off the victim's family to not press criminal charges. However, they finally realized she needed help they couldn't provide and sent her to counseling and anger management classes. She felt betrayed by her parents.

Her reputation took a nosedive. This was upsetting to Nina. She'd managed to get by on her cuteness and was enjoying life as a 'queen' at school, not to mention the occasional appearance in television commercials and modeling for magazines, but those contracts dried up.

People started treating her differently, having heard about the incident in the previous school. She only made a few friends in her new school and became a target for bullying herself, though that stopped because people were scared of her rages. Not only that, but she suffered heartbreak when the girl she had a crush on rejected her.

She retreated to the Internet for the attention she craved, running a webcam where she would exhibit her cute outfits, show off her newest stuffed animals, and dance to her favorite songs. That and the few friends she had sustained her.

AU PERSONALITY:
The most noticeable difference is that Momo's bad traits are considerably toned down in Nina due to not being directly fueled by the Evillands and her getting an actual decent upbringing. She learned what behaviors would win her praise and what would get her scolded, and ever since has acted accordingly.

She still desires adulation, but she's turned to trying to earn it from other ways than force, mainly by leveraging her cuteness as well as behaving in a way that'll win her praise from others. Overall, she puts on a pleasant facade to people she wants to impress, though that facade drops when she doesn't care what the other thinks of her. Certainly her bullying victims saw a less nice side of her.

She adores her family because they adore her and would probably beat up anyone who horribly insulted them and has in fact done so in the case of her little sister's bully. Though of late the relationship's become strained thanks to her parents pushing her into anger therapy. Still, she's closer to them than anyone else including her friends.

Her drive to satisfy herself and her tendency to rage when she can't get what she wants still are there, but they're considerably muted. After all, years passed between the incidents of her getting in notable trouble. It takes a lot to push her to the brink of assault.

Overall, this is more like what her past life's natural state would've been if she wasn't actively influenced by the Evillands.
